An event dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Volvo’s presence in the Russian market took place in Moscow, at the Petrovsky Travel Palace. It told about the history of the Swedish brand, and also pleased with the demonstration of collectible vintage cars.
The first Volvo cars appeared in the USSR in 1971, they were intended for employees of the Swedish Embassy in Moscow, Chambers of Commerce of various countries and private clients. By 1979, there were almost 600 Volvo cars in Moscow and St. Petersburg (Leningrad). During the same period, the capital was preparing to host the 1980 Olympics, so many cars and buses of the Swedish brand were brought to the country.
The first official Volvo service station was opened in 1989 in Moscow, and four years later – the official representative of the company. By 1997, the number of Volvo dealerships was one and a half dozen. From 2000 to 2010, they sold almost 80 thousand cars. The largest number (21 thousand) fell on 2007, and this record has not yet been broken. It is worth recalling that since 1999 the Volvo car division has been part of the Ford concern, but in 2009 it became independent and was allocated to the official representative office of Volvo Car Russia.

Volvo Cars is now a leader in automotive safety. The company is improving its technologies, introducing driver assistance and passenger protection systems, and intends to fully electrify its lineup by 2030. Volvo plans to bring electric models XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge to the Russian market in 2022.
