“Ukraine’s future is as a member of the European Union. We will always be by your side. It’s great to see my friend Ruslan Stefanchuk again”Roberta Metzola reported.
Metsola was the first European official to visit Ukraine last April, delivering a speech to the Ukrainian parliament just weeks after the start of the Russian invasion.
Meanwhile, US Attorney General Merrick Garland made a surprise visit to Lviv in western Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The British Minister of Justice, Dominic Raab, also visited the country.
Garland had been invited by his Ukrainian counterpart and participated, among other things, in a conference on “United for Justice”. The visit was unannounced, for security reasons.
The US secretary reiterated that the US is determined to hold Russia accountable “for the crimes it committed in its unjust and unprovoked invasion of a neighboring, sovereign country,” the official said.
It is the second time Garland has visited Ukraine in recent months. The US accuses Russia of war crimes and crimes against humanity and supports many Ukrainian and international investigations to that end. US prosecutors are working with their Ukrainian counterparts to investigate these crimes, Garland said in a statement marking the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion. Recently, he called the founder of the mercenary organization Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a “war criminal”.
