VKontakte has carried out the largest redesign of the video section: 4K, support for streaming and download up to 256 GB

The social network “VKontakte” presented a large-scale update of the corporate video section. The company calls it a true reboot, which is not surprising given the biggest changes in the past 6 years. The video platform has implemented several modern technologies and a scalable architecture that will allow live broadcasts with an unlimited number of online viewers, as well as provide stable viewing even in networks with unstable connections and on weak devices.

Now users can view videos and broadcasts in high quality. 7 resolution options up to 4K have been added to the video player settings, automatic selection will be enabled by default based on the technical characteristics of the device and the speed of the Internet. There is now support for Chromecast and AirPlay technologies, with the help of which content can be cast on the screen of a computer or TV. The function will work both in mobile applications on Android and iOS, and in the desktop version of VKontakte.

In connection with the addition of 4K-resolution for “Video VKontakte”, the maximum size of uploaded files has been revised – up to 256 GB. According to the social network, the increased limit will open up “ample opportunities for professional and semi-professional authors” with ultra-high definition cameras. Also on Android and iOS, background playback in the “picture-in-picture” mode has become available: a separate button is implemented in the video player interface for switching to the mini-window format. You can continue navigating in VKontakte or other applications on your smartphone without interrupting your browsing.

Technical Director of VKontakte Alexander Tobol noted that this step is a logical development of technologies for distributing video, broadcasts and calls, presented earlier. The company is currently focused on improving the delivery and consumption of content, so several more significant innovations will be launched before the end of the year.
