VK Video allows live streaming from the browser: OBS is no longer needed

Employees of the social network “VKontakte” today, October 20, officially announced that users of the proprietary platform “VK Video” get the opportunity to broadcast live from their computers without the need to use third-party software. Accordingly, now, to stream, the user only needs to use his browser and nothing more – while the function makes it possible to broadcast from the computer not only sound and video, but content from additional hardware equipment such as a webcam (or a camera acting in this role) or an external microphone.

The developers of the service said that these innovations will especially appeal to novice content authors who want to quickly launch a live broadcast without having to spend a lot of time searching, downloading, installing and configuring third-party software. Moreover, certain software like OBS requires a lot of time to configure various settings that many users are not even aware of – for them this is a significant barrier to streaming. Now from the computer it is enough to press a few buttons to go on the air.

To start a stream from a browser, the user just needs to select a cover for his broadcast, then enter the name of the stream, select the appropriate category (this is extremely important, since the algorithms select the relevant audience for the broadcast category) and go live. At the same time, it is possible to quite flexibly configure the privacy of the stream – for example, to determine who will be able to watch the broadcast and comment on it, and who will be prohibited from doing so. But the most pleasant thing about this news is that VK Video allows you to stream from the browser in 4K resolution at 60 FPS – this is the level of professional bloggers and streamers, so there are no restrictions on the quality of content.

In addition, and importantly, very soon users will be able to start streaming without additional software and through the mobile version of the VKontakte website. Probably, this will significantly expand the audience of the content author due to streams from a mobile device – this kind of content is insanely popular on major streaming sites. The developers also noted that a user can start a live broadcast both on his personal page on the social network and on behalf of the community (if the user is the page administrator).
