Buterin published an article in which it claims that confidentiality is important to maintain individual freedom of users, otherwise government and corporations can be used by their data. He criticized the idea of the need to increase transparency, which implies the belief that the world political leadership has reasonable and good intentions, and social culture and tolerance are developing. The fidelity of these assumptions is more and more questioned, buterin noted.
The founder of the Ethereum admitted that confidentiality can be an advantage only for those who go beyond social norms. At the same time, he emphasized that “you never know when you become one of them.” Butaterin expects that people’s need for confidentiality will only increase as technology is further developed. The interfaces of the “brain-computer” can allow automated systems to look directly into the human brain. Another problem is automated pricing, when companies are levied from people as much as, in their opinion, they can pay.
Buterin emphasized that in the case of the “Know your client” (KYC) procedure, not only the government, but any corporations can access personal data. Financial information is processed and stored by payment systems, banks and other intermediaries. Telectional companies can determine the whereabouts of their users and even sell these data in violation of the law. Buterin is concerned that persons who have access to data will always be interested in abuse them. The risks of hacking databases should not be excluded. Even if now the government deserves trust, everything can change in the future, and it is not known how it will use confidential data.
According to Butaterin, the solution to this problem may be evidence with zero disclosure (ZK), since they establish restrictions on who can see the information. ZK order is cryptographic protocols that allow one of the parties to prove the truth of the statement, without disclosing additional information. Such a system is evidence of a person on the basis of ZK, which confirms the uniqueness of the user, without revealing the person himself. Another solution is the recently neglected bullets of confidentiality, which allow anonymization of ETH in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Last week, Vitalik Buterin proposed a roadmap, which includes increasing the confidentiality of payments in the etherium, anonymization of activity, protection of RPC calls and network anonymity. Buterin recently stated that the main problem of the Ethereum’s basis is their insignificant social value.
