Viola Davis responds to criticism over her portrayal of Michelle Obama

Viola Davis is aware that not everyone loves his interpretation of Michelle Obama on the Showtime series, “The First Lady.”

The winning actress Oscar told BBC News it is “incredibly painful when people say negative things about your work”.

“How do you move on after the heartache, the failure?” she said. “But you do. Not everything is going to be an award-worthy performance.”

Viola received a flurry of criticism on social media for her performance, which focused on the actress’ exaggerated facial expressions while playing Michelle Obama.

The actress said that “critics are absolutely useless. And I’m not saying this to be nasty.”

She believes critics feel that “you’re surrounded by people who lie to you and think ‘I’m going to be the person who leans over and tells the truth’”, which allows them to be “cruel”.

“But ultimately, I feel like it’s my job as a leader to make bold choices,” Davis said. “Win or fail, it’s my duty to do it.”

“The First Lady” also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, playing Betty Ford, and Gillian Anderson like Eleanor Roosevelt. The series chronicles the lives of former first ladies.
