THE Viktor Orban is ready to launch a “national consultation” in Hungary to put pressure on European Union to lift the sanctions against it Russiauntil December 2022.
At a meeting of the ruling Fidesz party, Orbán called on his supporters “to do everything they can to ensure that Europe lifts sanctions by the end of the year at the latest,” pro-government newspaper Magyar Nemzet reported, while Brussels is considering imposing new measures.
The government confirmed the information reported in this report, according to AFP.
At the same time, Fidesz announced that it will launch a public consultation, a method the government has used since 2015 to denounce, for example, the EU’s immigration policy. The questionnaire that Hungarian citizens will be asked to fill in will give them “the opportunity to express their opinion on the matter,” Mate Kocsis, the head of the party’s parliamentary group, explained to reporters. “It is not normal that sanctions are decided exclusively by the Brussels elite,” he added.
