Taiwanese parliamentarians discussed a series of legislation this Friday (20).
The main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), and its allies are pushing for new bills, including stricter rules on the exposure of elected officials to the government budget, as well as changes to the constitutional court.
At one point, KMT lawmakers tried to block the entrance to parliament with chairs while Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers tried to enter the chamber.
Tempers flared and objects were thrown.
See confusion in parliament in Taiwan:
DPP parliamentarians said the amendments to the constitutional court will put Taiwan’s constitutional integrity at risk by making it difficult for judges to challenge the legislation.
Thousands of anti-opposition protesters gathered outside parliament, fearing for the country’s democracy.
