The head of the Wagner private military group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has left the Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, in southwestern Russia, a new video shows.
The video, posted on Telegram, geolocated and authenticated by CNN , shows Prigozhin sitting in the back seat of a vehicle. The crowd applauds and the vehicle stops as an individual approaches and shakes Prigozhin’s hand.
You can hear him saying “all the best” to the people around him before the vehicle pulls away.
Russian state media RIA Novosti quoted an unnamed eyewitness who said Prigozhin left the headquarters “with the fighters”.
It is the first time Prigozhin has been seen in public since he announced his troops would pull back from Moscow and return to their camps.
It’s unclear where Prigozhin is headed next, but under the apparent deal, he is expected to be shipped to Belarus and not face any criminal charges.
Other videos posted on Telegram, also geolocated and authenticated by CNN show Wagner forces withdrawing from their positions at military headquarters, crowds surrounding a convoy of the group’s vehicles, and people cheering the forces after it was announced that they would retreat.
Before Wagner’s forces were seen leaving, a video by Russian state media RIA Novosti showed a Russian military police vehicle arriving at the military headquarters.
