A video broadcast by Al Jazeera shows the moment an Israeli airstrike hit a school used as a shelter for displaced Palestinians in Gaza on Tuesday (9), east of Khan Younis.
At least 29 people, mostly women and children, were killed in the attack, Palestinian officials said, which took place as spectators crowded the school grounds in Abassan and street vendors sold drinks and cookies.
The video, which contains sensitive images, shows teenagers playing football in the backyard at the moment a loud explosion can be heard. The footage then shows several bodies and debris on the ground.
Reuters was able to confirm the location from nearby buildings, trees, flags and tile patterns that matched satellite imagery and the archive image.
The Israeli military said it was looking into reports that civilians had been wounded. It said the incident occurred when it struck with “precision munition” a Hamas fighter who took part in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that triggered the war.
The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it knew a soccer match was underway when the strike was ordered.
