Video shows damage to workshop after earthquake hits Vanuatu

A video obtained by Reuters showed the moment a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Port Vila, in Vanuatu, this Tuesday (17), local time.

Images from a security camera circuit show the interior of a workshop when it was hit by the earthquake. Tools and furniture fell and one man lost his balance.

Reuters was able to confirm the location and date of the filming.

Local media and the United Nations (UN) reported six deaths, not yet officially confirmed, and reported that two main water reservoirs and a hospital were damaged.

A Port Vila hospital official told VBTC that more than 50 people were injured.

According to a police officer to local media, rescue efforts continue. International assistance was also requested.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and that six aftershocks struck the country after the initial quake.

Reuters was unable to confirm casualty figures as communications disruptions make contact with Vanuatu authorities difficult.
