Videos recorded by security cameras show the last moments of Maritza Guimarães da Costa, 41, and Ana Carolina de Souza, 16, before they were killed by police officer Erik Busetti, in a crime committed in March 2020.
Erik was arrested red-handed on the day of the crime and admitted to having committed the feminicides. However, almost four years later, there is still no decision from the Court. The popular jury is scheduled to take place on May 15, 2024. In the recently released images, it is possible to see the police officer arguing and attacking the women minutes before shooting them. The officer surrendered to the police shortly after the incident. According to information released by the Civil Police at the time, the couple’s 9-year-old daughter was sleeping in a room during the action. After firing the shots, Busetti removed her from the scene and left her at a neighbor’s house, asking her to call the police, as she was going to turn herself in.
Sought by the reporter to comment on the new development, the delegate’s lawyer, Cláudio Dalledone, stated that “more than looking at the rain, it is important to explain how the cloud was formed, and the defense will justify why that tragedy began”.
Delegate did not accept the separation
The main hypothesis considered in the investigation is that the murders were related to a divorce process that was in progress between Erik and Maritza. According to one of her family’s lawyers, who was a Civil Police clerk, they were already separated and were waiting for the house to be sold so they could each buy a property.
“They already slept in separate rooms. That day, she had returned from Operation Summer on the coast of Paraná, and when she returned, he had bought drinks to propose a romantic night,” lawyer Samuel Rangel told CNN.
“As the situation was already defined, she did not accept it. As a result, he became enraged and began attacking her daughter, from a first marriage. When Maritza heard the attacks, she ran to her daughter’s aid, at which point he discharged the gun on both of them,” Rangel concluded.
Although he admitted to the crime, Erik remained silent during his interrogation with the police.
Continues to receive salary
According to a consultation carried out by CNN On the Transparency Portal of the Government of Paraná, even though he has been detained for more than 3 years, Erik still appears as an active employee, and receives a salary for the position he holds. In November this year, he was paid R$26,762.70.
In 2020, the Civil Police stated that the delegate would also face administrative disciplinary proceedings, under penalty of dismissal from his position. When contacted by CNN, the police did not say whether the process was completed or whether any obstacles were encountered, until the last update of this report.
Furthermore, in August 2023 another issue was challenged by the family defense. The police chief, from inside the Medical-Penal Complex in Pinhais, where he is detained, accessed a restricted access police system multiple times.
According to the investigation opened to investigate the case, he tried to consult his own name in confidential Civil Police systems. Until the publication of this report, the police also did not provide details about the progress of the investigation.
