In Australia, an animal rescue team recorded a rare interaction last week: a male koala hugging the body of a deceased female.
In the publication's caption, Koala Rescue says it received a call from civilians who found two koalas on the ground, close to a tree. When they arrived at the scene, they realized that the adult female had already died, but that the male remained close to the body.
“It is always devastating to participate in a rescue involving a deceased koala, but it was even more heartbreaking to witness the male actually holding and hugging the deceased female. […] This type of behavior is rarely witnessed by our rescuers, but it confirms the empathetic and caring nature of koalas”, says the text.
The institution also said that, after rescuing both animals, the team confirmed the physical integrity of the male and released him nearby. He also took the opportunity to thank the people who made the ransom request.
“They have been seeing and caring for both koalas for some time, with the animals passing through their property. Without caring people like them, Koala Rescue would not be able to function. We are eternally grateful for the kindness and effort they put into caring for our koalas.”
Koala Rescue is a voluntary institution located in Adelaide, South Australia, which is available 24 hours a day to rescue koalas. They still play an important role in raising awareness and preserving marsupials.
