Video: Raia Rare Rare is sighted in Ilhabela on the coast of SP

A hammock was caught in Ilhabela, on the north coast of São Paulo. The registration of the fish is rare because the species is threatened with extinction. The images were made by the diver and photographer of Nature Rafael Mesquita.

The sighting of this fish on the Brazilian coast at this time of year is rare. According to Rafael, the species is seasonal and does not appear on the coast all year round. “They appear in the southeast only in winter, and then we don’t know exactly where they go,” says the photographer. “This is one of the reasons for this record to be rare,” he adds.

In the video, you can see several fish of the Guaivira species around the streak. According to the diver, the fish are cleaning their skin on the blankets. “The fish are scraping to clean, take parasites that have on their body,” explains the diver.

“The town streak has denticles and, in the sense that they swim, help the sinful ray to slide in the water, but in the opposite direction it is like a sandpaper,” explains Rafael.

The presence of the fish using the hammark to clean makes the record even rarer. “It is a behavior that has not been widely observed in the world or in Brazil,” says the photographer.

Raia-manta is the largest species of ray in the world and one of the largest fish in the world. It can reach up to eight meters of wingspan and weigh more than two tons.
