Francisco, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died after suffering a stroke and heart failure, the Vatican said.

The certificate, published by the Vatican, states that Francis went in a coma before his death on the morning of Monday.

The Pope’s death was announced by Vatican Cardinal Kevin Farrell this morning.

“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sadness that I communicate the death of our holy Father Francis,” said a statement from Camerlengo.

At 7:35 am this morning (local time), the bishop of Rome, Francisco, returned to the Father’s house. All his life was devoted to the service of the Lord and his church.

The Pope confirmed in his final will that he wanted to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maior, in Rome, and not in the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, unlike previous pontiffs.

The text specified that Francis wanted to be buried “on the floor, without special decoration”, but with the inscription of his papal name in Latin: Franciscus.

Several world leaders and politicians mourned Pope Francis’ death on Monday at the age of 88. Famous and celebrities, such as influencer Virginia Fonseca and actress and presenter Whoopi Goldberg, also used their social networks to regret the death of the pontiff.
