The Justice of Minas Gerais received, this Tuesday (9), the complaint from the Public Ministry (MPMG) against 13 people suspected of being involved in animal abuse at the Animal Care Veterinary Clinic (Animed), in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizon. The site was the target of investigations in 2019.
The clinic's two partners, two managers, the establishment's lawyer and seven veterinarians were denounced for joining together with the intention of obtaining financial advantages.
Among the crimes of mistreatment that were allegedly committed by professionals are the removal of blood from animals taken for bathing and grooming, without authorization from their owners, with the aim of selling; delay in communicating the death of the animal to extend the period of hospitalization; and freezing the animals and then thawing them to simulate that the animal had just died.
The complaint also covers the crimes of embezzlement, irregular disposal of infectious waste, animal abuse and the sale of prohibited, expired and adulterated medicines. Another person was charged with false testimony.
According to the complaint, offered by the Public Prosecutor's Office for the Defense of the Environment of Nova Lima and the State Coordination for the Defense of Fauna (Cedef), Animed was built and used for crimes aimed at obtaining profit and causing suffering to animals and tutors.
According to the complaint, veterinarians also simulated procedures on dead animals, prescribed unnecessary medications and used prohibited and expired medications.
The Public Prosecutor's Office asked that the defendants be ordered to pay compensation for the damage caused, lose the proceeds of crime, have their political rights suspended and the loss of the clinic's assets.
The application also contains a request for a precautionary measure to suspend the veterinary profession, blocking the accounts and assets of all those accused, in addition to the closure of the clinic. It is also prohibited for partners to become owners of companies that provide veterinary treatment.
The Animed clinic was closed in 2020, a year after investigations began. A CNN tries to contact the accused's defense.
