Veteran American television actor Martin Mull dies at 80

Martin Mull a veteran actor who has appeared in over a hundred films and television shows, such as “Roseanne” (1988-1997), “Veep” (2012-2019) and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” (1976-1977), died at the age of 80.

“I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th after a valiant battle with a long illness,” his daughter wrote. Maggie Mull in a tribute on Instagram on Friday (28).

“He was known for excelling in every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never funny. My father will dearly miss his wife and daughter, his friends and co-workers, fellow artists, comedians and musicians, and – the sign of a truly exceptional person – many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously,” he continued.

A CNN has reached out to a representative for Mull for comment.

The comedian entered TV in the 1970s, when he starred in the soap opera parodyto “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” and then its spin-off “Fernwood Tonight” . He starred as Colonel Mustard in the 1985 film The Seven Suspects. From there, he played roles in several comedy series, including “Roseanne” , “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” , “Arrested Development” It is “Two and a Half Men” .

On social media, actors and others who worked with Mull remembered him for his talent and comedy.

Actor Harry Shearer in an X post recalled his time working with Mull: “It took me a moment to realize that Martin Mull has passed away. During the late 1970s, we worked together on Fernwood Tonight and its successor series,” said Shearer. “We wrote together, often on the beach (!), and sometimes I went out and played with him. Lots of laughs! It’s always a pleasure to be together. Rest in peace, mm.”

Roseanne actor Michael Fishman called Mull “a legend” and writes, “He was a tremendous talent, always funny. As amazing as he was on camera, he was even more amazing. The world was better with him in it. Maybe the other side needed more laughs.”
