Tickets went on sale this Tuesday for those who want to visit Venice from April onwards, in a test scheme that seeks to control the increasing number of tourists spending just one day in the city.
The ticket for one day costs 5 euros and will be valid between 8:30 am and 4 pm local time.
The new daily admission fee will come into effect from April 25th, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be required for the following ten days and then most weekends until mid-July.
Visitors will have to pay online (https://cda.ve.it/en/) and will get a QR code that gives them access for a day. Anyone caught without a ticket can face a fine of between 50 and 300 euros.
Tourists under 14 or with accommodation booked will need to register and obtain a code, but access will be free.
There will be no limit on the number of people entering the city, at least initially, while municipal authorities study the system.
