Venezuelan woman killed by couple in Amazonas is laid to rest in Manaus

Venezuelan artist Julieta Hernández, killed in the interior of Amazonas while traveling by bicycle through Brazil, will be laid to rest in the capital of Amazonas this Wednesday (10). After the ceremony, her body will be taken to Venezuela on Thursday (11).

According to the Venezuelan government, which provides assistance to the victim's family, the burial will take place on Friday (12) in the city of Puerto Ordaz, where the artist's mother lives.

The Public Security Secretariat (SSP-AM) reported that Julieta's body was released from the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Manaus on Tuesday afternoon (9), by her mother and sister. The government of Amazonas stated that it provided psychosocial and logistical support to the artist's friends and family who are in Manaus.

Julieta, who was 38 years old and presented herself as a “nomadic migrant, doll maker, clown and bicycle traveler”, was found dead in a forest in the city of Presidente Figueiredo, in the interior of the state, close to the place where she was last seen. According to the Civil Police, she was raped and killed by a couple who initially offered her shelter.

In a statement, the Venezuelan government repudiated feminicide and called for “exemplary punishment for this abominable crime”. The country also thanked the Brazilian and Amazonas governments for their collaboration in repatriating the body and caring for the victim's family.

The group Circo di SóLadies, a company of female clowns, called for acts throughout Brazil in response to the artist's death. According to the organization, more than 20 cities have already confirmed demonstrations for this Friday (2).

“We call on people all over Brazil to mobilize pedals in their cities simultaneously next Friday, in order to honor Julieta Hernandez, Miss Bubblegum, to occupy the streets of Brazil in solidarity with Julieta and to shout against barbarism, femicide , the violence and extermination that women suffer daily”, says the call.

Remember the case

A couple was arrested by the Amazonas Civil Police on Friday night (5), suspected of involvement in the death of Julieta Hernández, a Venezuelan artist who had been missing since December 23rd.

According to the Public Security Secretariat, the body was found buried in a forest in the city of Presidente Figueiredo, in the interior of the state, close to the place where Julieta was last seen. Identification was carried out through necropapiloscopy examination.

Information from the delegate responsible for the case indicates that the crime was committed due to the theft of the artist's cell phone, combined with a fight between the couple due to jealousy. Julieta would have stayed at the couple's house. In the early hours of the morning, the man, identified as Thiago, allegedly tried to steal the victim's cell phone, who reacted and was hanged until he lost consciousness. Afterwards, Thiago's wife, identified as Deliomara, at her husband's command, tied Julieta's hands and feet. It was at that moment that Thiago raped the Venezuelan woman.

According to Deliomara's testimony, she turned on the lights and, jealous of her husband, threw alcohol and set them both on fire. Afterwards, the couple took Julieta to a forest area and buried her. The police do not rule out the possibility that she was buried alive. The couple has 5 children, who were in the house while everything was happening.

Thiago already has an open police report in Manaus. The couple will be charged with robbery, rape and concealment.

The police found, near the suspects' house, parts of the bicycle used by the artist. The equipment was nearby where the body was located.
