“From the Bolívar state, the FANB defends our sovereignty and the will of the people marked on the map of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, integral and sovereign with our Essequibo territory”, states the GNB in the post.
On December 3, in a referendum, the population of Venezuela voted in favor of measures that could result in the annexation of the Essequibo region, currently belonging to Guyana.
Following the results of the vote, the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro stated that it was a moment of “celebration of the great victory of the people of Venezuela in the consultative referendum for the defense of our Guyana Essequiba”.
The border of the disputed territory was defined in an agreement in 1899, when Guyana was still part of the British Empire.
Venezuela reclaimed the territory in recent years after the discovery of around 11 billion barrels of oil and gas off the coast of Guyana.
The crisis between Venezuela and Guyana had repercussions abroad, and was even brought up for discussion at the United Nations Security Council last Friday (8).
In a video shared in the GNB post, a Venezuelan soldier says that “the homeland today, and now more than ever, is one Venezuela”.
