The opposition parties in Venezuela are considering the possibility of proceeding with the dissolution of the supported by USA and other countries, transitional government led by Juan Guaidothe Financial Times reported yesterday Thursday (20/10), citing a senior executive of the alliance they have formed.
Three of the four largest Plataforma Unitaria (PU) parties are in favor of the idea and have enough votes to go ahead, according to the FT.
A representative of Mr. Guaido, on the other hand, told the newspaper that there is no clear position in the opposition alliance on the future of the transitional government.
The ten main opposition parties have agreed that in June 2023 they will organize a vote to nominate a common candidate for the presidency. The next presidential election in the Latin American country will normally be held in 2024.
Mr Guaidó and his allies accuse President Nicolas Maduro of being elected by “fraud” in the 2018 elections, from which the main opposition forces were absent. Mr Maduro’s government rejects the charge.
A parallel transitional government under Mr Guaido, a former parliament speaker, was formed in 2019, but its efforts to oust Mr Maduro from power have failed.
