Vassos Lyssaridis died at the age of 101 – He took an active part in the games of the union of Cyprus with Greece

The founder and first president of the E.D.E.K. party passed away at the age of 101, Vassos Lyssaridis.

Full of days, the doctor, politician and activist associated his name with the greatest events of life in Cyprus, but also with Archbishop Makarios, of whom he was a personal physician.

Bassos Lyssaridis was born in Lefkara on May 13, 1920. He was a member of parliament, chairman of the House of Representatives, while in 1969 he founded the Socialist Party EDEK, of which he was chairman until July 2001.

He took an active part in the games of the union of Cyprus with Greece.

During the bi-communal unrest in the years 1963-1964, he led the people’s army under the auspices of the Cypriot state, liberating Pentadaktylos. In 1974 he resisted the coup of July 15, 1974. On August 30, 1974 he was the target of an assassination attempt, during which the organizing secretary of the youth of EDEK, Doros Loizou, was killed.
