Valve disassembled the Steam Deck to prevent users from doing it

Users who pre-order the portable game console Steam Deck will receive it in December, but the rest will have to wait until the second quarter of 2022 – during this period, the execution of orders of the “second wave” is promised. However, anyone interested can already watch the official Steam Deck teardown video.

Valve disassembled the Steam Deck to prevent users from doing it

Valve disassembled the Steam Deck for a reason, but in order … to dissuade users from doing the same. The company does not recommend disassembling the set-top box, well, or doing it only if absolutely necessary. For example, to replace control keys (sticks) – the developers assure that third-party companies will launch them on sale over time.

But changing the SSD is strongly discouraged. This is because the SSD is located close to the Wi-Fi adapter, so the company carefully selected SSDs for performance, power consumption, and electromagnetic interference. It is logical that not every SSD on the market will fit the console in the same way as the “native” one.

As a reminder, the Steam Deck is built on an AMD Van Gogh APU with a Zen 2 CPU and an RDNA2 GPU. SSD volumes are 64, 256 and 512 GB. MicroSD cards are used to expand the memory. The console configuration also includes 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, and a 40 Wh battery. The cost of the set-top box is from 400 to 650 dollars.
