USP adopts new admission system via Enem for undergraduate courses

The University of São Paulo (USP) has adopted a new system for admitting students to undergraduate courses via the National High School Exam (Enem).

Starting this year, for admission in 2023, candidates will be called directly by Fuvest based on the scores they obtain in the Enem tests. The new form of entry will be called Enem-USP according to information released by the university on Friday (11).

Currently, USP uses the Unified Selection System (Sisu), linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC), to select students. The new form of admission had already been unanimously approved by the USP Graduation Council, held in October.

According to USP, the purpose of the change is to make it possible for the student approved via Enem to register together with the entrant through Fuvest, not depending on the system and the Sisu calendar.

“We will continue to use the Enem, but inserting the grade into a new model that will allow greater agility and scope in the process of recruiting and enrolling new students,” said USP’s dean, Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, in a statement.

The Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Aluísio Segurado, explained that the objective of the new system is to “speed up the process of integration and inclusion of new students, in such a way that everyone starts academic activities at the same time, has the opportunity to participate in the Freshman Reception [com atividades culturais e científicas organizadas pelas Unidades de Ensino e Pesquisa]reinforcing with them the feeling of belonging to the University”.

Fuvest will be responsible for the systematization of enrollments, for classification according to the criteria defined by the courses and for calling the selected candidates.

As this will be the first year of implementation of USP-Enem, a specific public notice with the calendar and guidelines for registration in the system should be released soon, according to USP. From the next selection process, for admission in 2024, registration will be made according to the same calendar as Fuvest.

Distribution of vacancies

USP offers 11,147 places in its undergraduate courses this year. Of these, 8,211 are destined for selection by the Fuvest entrance exam and 2,936 vacancies for the Enem-USP, without changing what had already been approved by the University Council in June this year.

Of the total vacancies offered by Fuvest, 4,954 will be reserved for candidates in the broad competition mode; 2,169 vacancies for public school candidates; and 1,088 for public schools/blacks, browns and indigenous people.

For the selection of Enem-USP, 606 vacancies are being allocated for wide competition; 1,237 for public school students and 1,093 for public/black, brown and indigenous school students.

In 2022, USP registered a rate of 50.2% of students enrolled from public schools in its undergraduate courses and, among them, 36% self-declared black, brown and indigenous. Of the 10,901 vacancies filled this year, which represents 97.8% of the total, 5,468 are students from public schools and, of these, 1,969 are black, brown or indigenous.

Currently, of the total of 59,267 undergraduate students, 20,231 have entered vacancies for affirmative action policies, which is equivalent to 34%.
