The use of the “Z” symbol by Russian forces could lead to prosecutions in two German states, officials said.
“Whoever is publicly expressing their consent to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression should expect criminal prosecution,” Boris Pistorius, Interior Minister for the state of Lower Saxony, said in a press release.
Last Friday (25), state police began checking whether the “Z” presentation was aired in relation to the war in Ukraine.
The symbol “represents the Russian army’s acts against international law,” Pistorius said.
The state of Bavaria has also warned supporters who use the “Z” symbol of Russian forces publicly that they are at risk of prosecution, warned Bavarian Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich in a press release.
Days before Russian forces launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine, videos and photos began circulating on social media showing tanks, communication trucks and rocket launchers bearing the letter “Z” heading towards the border.
When the offensive began, what was a mysterious military symbol became a sign of popular support for the war in Russia, and what analysts describe as the unfolding of a terrifying new nationalist movement.
The Russians painted the “Z” on their cars, wore black hoods emblazoned with the symbol, and created makeshift “Z” brooches on their lapels — a sign that there is some popular support for President Vladimir Putin and his efforts to expand the sphere of influence.
