At USA, more than 1,000 place names and monuments are expected to be renamed as states and the country try to erase the offensive names. In all of this there is either racist or a sexist meaning, since the white settlers conquered and inhabited the land where the natives had previously lived.
In the Colorado, for example, a committee set up by the state is considering various proposals to change the names of at least 20 sites, including the Redskin Mountain (Red-skinned Mountain) and the plateau Negro.
The committee has already decided to change its name Canyon of the Chinese (Chinaman Gulch) in Canyon Yan Sing (Yan Singh) which in Cantonese means endurance. He even changed his name Squaw Mountain. “Squaw” is a derogatory term for indigenous women. His new name is Mestaa’ehehe Mountain, in honor of a translator from the tribe Ceylon in the 19th century.
THE Deb Haland, Minister of the Interior and the first Native American politician to serve in US Cabinet, said last month that the word “squaw” was derogatory and had ordered it removed from more than 650 federal site names. “Racist terms have no place in our vocabulary or in the name of our land,” he said.
“Words are ideas,” he told the newspaper «The Washington Post» The Randy Willock, member of his state committee Colorado. He went on to say: “These new words that we will learn to use will unite us with the true story.”
In the meantime, in her state California A similar effort is being made to rename some parks that have offensive language in their name. Last June in his state Texas 16 parts were renamed and the word “negro” was removed. Similar changes are underway in its states Nevada and her Jute.
Change, however, is not an easy task and can take years, especially if there is strong resistance at the political level or even for differences in the new name. THE Haaland, however, hopes to speed up proceedings at least at the federal level. Ultimately, however, the decisions are made by US Geographical Names Commission. THE Jennifer Ranion, a member of the Commission, said that until last October he had received 430 proposals to change his names Mulatto Run of Virginia (s.s. Mulatto means mixed race) and his Mountain of the Dead Hindu in the Oregon.
