The United States suspended planning and performing offensive cyber operations against Russia.
The information was initially reported by the journalistic website The Record and confirmed by CNN with a high -ranking US employee.
The pause in the operations of the US cyber command linked to the Army, occurs when Donald Trump’s government seeks to distemance with relations with Russia, three years after the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine.
On Friday (28), Trump and Vice President JD Vance scolded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House, launching uncertainties in the USA-Ukraine relationship.
The suspension is “a big blow,” said the employee heard by the CNN as planning for such operations takes time and research to be done.
The biggest concern, according to the employee, is that the break in offensive cyber operations against Russia makes the US more vulnerable to potential Russian cyber attacks.
The United States recognizes that Russia has a hacker framework that can stop US critical infrastructure and collect sensitive intelligence.
“It is not uncommon for the Pentagon to pause actions that are potentially destabilizing or provocative for negotiations, including cyber operations,” Jason Kikta, a former cyber command officer, told CNN .
“But if a pause in planning (operations) is also done, it can make offensive options obsolete and therefore unviable,” he added.
Vladimir Putin’s government sees cyberspace as a source of advantage over the US as it can infiltrate American critical infrastructure and try to influence elections in the country.
In turn, American military and intelligence hackers have increasingly pursued in recent years cybercriminals and Russian intelligence agents.
Since 2016, when Russia has used bots, trolls and hackers to try to influence Trump’s election, Moscow has repeated this manual in any way in all US presidential elections, according to US officials.
Cyber Command was established over a decade, partly to respond to threats from Russia and other foreign powers.
The command has matured considerably since its inception, evolving into a force with thousands of operators who conduct offensive and defensive missions.
From his base in Fort Meade, Maryland, alongside the National Security Agency, the cyber command has also become increasingly a US power projection tool, sending experts to allies around the world.
In December 2021, there was a trip by experts to Ukraine in anticipation of Russia’s invasion of the country to help the Ukrainian government prepare for a wave of Russian cyber attacks.
Months after the invasion of Russia, the cyber command confirmed that it was actively involved in helping Ukraine defend itself with cyber attacks.
