Next week will be “very critical” to determine if the United States will continue to try to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine, the main US diplomat said on Sunday, suggesting that President Donald Trump’s deadline to reach an agreement is quickly approaching.
“We are close, but not enough,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio on NBC’s “Meet The Press” program. He described Moscow and Kiev as closer than ever to close an agreement, but still modeled the expectations of a breakthrough.
“This week will be a really important week, where we will have to decide if this is an effort in which we want to remain involved or if it is time to focus on other issues that are equally, if no longer, important,” Rubio said.
“We want to see this happen. There is reason to be optimistic, but there is reason to be realistic,” he told NBC.
Rubio’s comments are the latest sign that Trump is losing his patience to try to close the conflict. As he approaches his hundredth day in office, Trump expressed frustration with both Russia and Ukraine for resisting US efforts to bring peace.
Trump, who promised to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours after taking office, recently said to advisors that resolving the conflict has been harder than he expected.
