USA order screening on social networks of Gaza visa applicants

The Trump administration ordered on Thursday (17) a screening on the social networks of all US visa applicants who were in the Gaza Strip from January 1, 2007, showed an internal telegram of the State Department seen by Reuters, in the latest initiative to reinforce control of foreign travelers.

The order to conduct a social media verification to all visuals of immigrants and non -immigrants should include workers from non -governmental organizations, as well as individuals who are at the Palestinian enclave for any time for official or diplomatic reasons, the telegram said.

“If the revision of social media results reveals potentially derogatory information related to safety issues, a SAO should be submitted,” the message added, referring to a security advisory opinion, which is an interinstitutional investigation to determine whether a visa applicant poses a risk to US national security.

The telegram was sent to all US diplomatic and consular posts.

The measure occurs after President Donald Trump’s government revoked hundreds of visas across the country, including the status of some legal residents.

The government used a 1952 law that allows the deportation of any immigrant whose presence in the country the secretary of state considers harmful to US foreign policy.

The telegram, dated April 17, was signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
