United States President Donald Trump will give up trying to negotiate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine within a few days unless there are clear signs that an agreement can be closed, US Secretary of State Rubio said on Friday.
“We will not continue with this endeavor for weeks and months on end. So we need to determine very quickly now, and I am talking about a matter of days, whether or not this will be viable in the coming weeks. If it is, we are not, we have other priorities to focus as well,” Rubio said in Paris after meeting with European and Ukrainians.
Rubio said Trump was still interested in an agreement, but was willing to move on if there were no immediate signals of progress.
During his election campaign, Trump promised to end the war in the first 24 hours at the White House. Upon taking office, he moderated this statement, suggesting an agreement until April or May as obstacles increased.
Rubio’s comments highlight the growing frustrations with the lack of progress in initiatives to solve a growing list of geopolitical challenges.
