Usa, Biden prepares to formally recognize the Armenian genocide

As he promised during the election campaign, American President Joe Biden will formally recognize the massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire – during the First World War – as genocide: US officials say it and write it on New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He will do it by 24 April, the day of the anniversary of the massacres. Biden’s predecessors avoided using the word “genocide” when commemorating the tragic affair.

A bipartisan group of more than 100 House members signed a letter to Biden on Wednesday asking him to become the first US president to formally recognize atrocities committed against Armenians as genocide. “The shameful silence of the US government on the historical fact of the Armenian genocide it lasted too long and must end, ”the parliamentarians wrote. “We urge you to respect your commitments and to tell the truth.”

Surely this move will help make relations between the United States and Turkey even more tense. Biden administration officials had not informed Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as of Wednesday. But the Turkish foreign minister promptly replied that the recognition of the genocide “would damage” US-Turkey ties.

Turkey admits that many Armenians were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during World War I, but disputes the figures and denies that the murders were systematically orchestrated and that they constitute genocide. If Biden continues to pursue his goal, he will almost certainly face opposition from Turkey, which has always managed to persuade the president’s predecessors to evade the issue.

The relationship between Biden and Erdoğan (who got along very well with Donald Trump), among other things, did not start in the best way: more than three months after the beginning of his mandate, the American president has not yet spoken with him.
