Flooding in eastern Kentucky has caused the death of at least three people, as the governor of the US state Andy Beshear announced today, expressing fears that the number of victims may rise to double digits.
Strong storms lashed the eastern part of the US state, causing damage that will take years to repair, said Beshear, who declared a state of emergency in six counties this morning.
“We are facing the most devastating flooding in Kentucky’s history,” he said, adding that “hundreds of residents will lose their homes.”
Kentucky’s governor said one person died in Knott County, while two residents – including an 81-year-old woman – died in Perry County.
Because of the floods, 23,000 households have been left without electricity, while the fate of some residents is unknown, according to Beshear.
According to the forecasts of meteorologists, the bad weather will continue for the next 24 hours.
