A small Cessna Citation aircraft crashed in a mountainous area of southwest Virginia, the Federal Aviation Administration announced this evening.
There is currently no further information on this accident. Aircraft of this type can carry from 7 to 12 passengers, depending on the model, according to the company’s website.
Around the time of the crash, a supersonic boom was heard in Washington that the Office of Emergency Management in Annapolis, Maryland, said was caused by a Pentagon-sanctioned flight. It is not clear if the two incidents are connected.
Residents of the federal capital reported hearing a loud bang in the afternoon. Fire and security officials said they had no reports of an incident. “There is no threat at this time,” the Department of Homeland Security announced via Twitter.
