US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller highlighted that the US plans to discuss the consequences of Iran’s attack on Israel “with Israeli counterparts before talking about [isso] publicly”.
“That’s not to say I’m ruling anything out, but I would answer any questions this way, meaning we want to have these conversations directly with our Israeli counterparts in the coming days,” Miller commented in response to a question from CNN.
The spokesperson agreed with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in stating that the country will coordinate the response with Israel, calling the attack “a significant escalation.” He also pointed out that there will be consequences.
“Of course there must be consequences for Iran after this attack. We make it clear that there must be consequences. I won’t go into detail about what those consequences are today, but we will be coordinating with our Israeli counterparts,” Miller said at a press conference on Tuesday.
He stressed that the missile attack was defeated in part due to coordination between the US, Israel and partners. Miller did not specify which other countries.
Asked whether Israel had escalated the conflict in recent weeks, Miller argued that Israel “certainly did things to expand the conflict, but if we look at the actions they took, they were bringing terrorists to justice.”
Israel assassinated Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Friday (27) in a major attack in Beirut, Lebanon.
In contrast, he pointed out that today “Iran came to the defense of a terrorist organization”.
“If we look at what Iran did today – we have been warning for some time about the threat posed by Iran arming and financing terrorist groups across the Middle East – today’s attack only demonstrates the danger of these actions,” he continued. Miller.
“What we saw was Iran launching a state attack to protect and defend the terrorist groups it built, fed and controls. So there is a difference,” he added.
Miller also highlighted that “this wave of attack is over”, adding that it does not mean that other waves are coming. The US view is that it would be “incredibly scalable” if Iran carried out further attacks on Israel.
Understand the conflict in the Middle East
Iran’s attack on Israel comes amid the war between the Israeli Army and Hezbollah, a Lebanese paramilitary group supported by the Iranian government.
The offensive comes one day after the Israeli Army began a “limited ground operation” in Lebanon.
Israel has launched a series of airstrikes on regions in the neighboring country. On September 23, the country had its deadliest day since the 2006 war, with more than 500 fatalities.
According to the Israeli military, the targets are members and military infrastructure of Hezbollah, one of the most powerful paramilitary forces in the Middle East and supported by Iran.
The offensive reached several points in Lebanon, including the country’s capital, Beirut. Thousands of people sought refuge in shelters and left cities in the south of the country.
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, as confirmed by the group itself.
Hezbollah and Israel began exchanging attacks after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip. The Lebanese group is an ally of Hamas, which invaded Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, killing hundreds of people and capturing hostages.
Due to the bombings, thousands of residents of northern Israel, where the border with Lebanon is located, had to be displaced. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised several times to return these citizens to their homes.
On September 17, Israel added the return of these residents as an official war objective.
At least two Brazilian teenagers died in the attacks. Itamaraty condemned the situation and called for an end to hostilities.
With the increase in hostilities, the Brazilian government announced an operation to repatriate Brazilians in Lebanon.
