The United States plans to announce by Tuesday (9) a new $1.2 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which will include air defense systems, ammunition and funds for training, a US official said.
The Ukrainians will receive 155mm howitzer ammunition, anti-drone munitions and funding for satellite imagery, as well as various types of training, the official said.
The package is paid for with funding from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which allows President Joe Biden’s administration to buy weapons from industry rather than withdrawing US weapons stockpiles.
The military aid, first reported by the Associated Press, comes as Congress and the White House debate ways to avoid a debt default, with many Republicans demanding drastic cuts in domestic spending in exchange for raising the debt limit.
However, members of both parties insist they support continued aid to Ukraine, including top Speaker of the House of Republicans Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Senate.
