New York stock markets closed with a predominantly negative sign on Tuesday (23).
The indices came to operate with gains earlier in the day, supported by the prospect of a less intense monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve (Fed, the US central bank), but the breath was short, with stocks in some sectors, such as real estate. , under pressure, while energy was the positive highlight, in an upturn of more than 3% for oil.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.47% at 32,909.59 points, the S&P 500 fell 0.22% to 4,128.73 points, and the Nasdaq ended flat at 12,381.30 points.
On the indicator agenda, the US purchasing managers’ index (PMI) dropped from 47.7 in July to 45.0 in the August preliminary, the lowest in 27 months, according to S&P Global.
Sales of new homes in the country, in turn, had a sharp drop in July compared to June, 12.6%, worse results than analysts’ forecast. If the data are negative signals for the US economy, they on the other hand reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates by 50 basis points in September, not 75 basis points. A less tight monetary policy tends to be beneficial for equities.
Before midday, the initial breath of the exchanges gave way to a mixed picture. Among stocks in focus, Twitter fell 7.32%, following news that a former head of security at the company had filed a complaint against the company for allegedly failing to protect its users’ confidential data and lying about security issues.
On a day of weak new home sales data, the real estate sector was among the biggest declines among stocks. Health and communications services also fell, but energy and industry were among the gains.
Among some key stocks, Apple fell 0.20%, Microsoft was down 0.47% and Meta was down 1.19%. Amazon, on the other hand, rose 0.30% and, among oil companies, Chevron advanced 3.24% and ExxonMobil had a gain of 4.24%. Boeing closed up 0.69%, but banks showed a negative sign, such as Goldman Sachs (-0.65%), JPMorgan (-0.99%) and Citigroup (-0.59%).
