The United States’ special envoy for climate issues, John Kerry, celebrated, through a post on Twitter, Brazil’s promises of measures at COP26 in relation to the climate.
On the social network, Kerry wrote that “celebrates Brazil’s new commitments to end illegal deforestation by 2028, achieve a significant 50% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by 2050. This adds a crucial boost to the movement to combat the climate crisis. We look forward to working together,” said the US special envoy.
This Monday (1st), the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, presented Brazil’s goals at COP26, more daring than those initially considered. According to the minister, Brazil should reduce 50% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and neutralize carbon emissions by 2050.
Initially, the government’s proposal was to present a reduction of between 45% and 48% of emissions by the end of the decade, as anticipated by CNN’s international affairs analyst, Lourival Sant’Anna, on Sunday (31). There was also the expectation that Brazil would not sign any decision related to the neutralization of carbon emissions until the middle of the century.
“Green Power”
President Jair Bolsonaro (non-party) did not attend COP26, the United Nations Conference on Climate Change. He sent a video of less than three minutes with messages for the event.
In his speech, Bolsonaro said that “Brazil is a green power” and that in the fight against climate change “we have always been part of the solution, not the problem”.
He said the country has lines of credit for green projects “in areas such as forest conservation and restoration, low-emission agriculture, renewable energy, sanitation, transport and information technology” — which would support the new target for reducing greenhouse gases 50% greenhouse, promised by the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, at COP26.
