The United States accused Russia of financing a disinformation campaign in Latin America to weaken support for Ukraine and increase anti-American sentiment and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).
“The Kremlin’s goal appears to be to spread propaganda and disinformation through local media in a way that appears organic to Latin American audiences,” says a statement from the US State Department published this Tuesday (7).
The statement is the latest move by the U.S. in its efforts to confront what it says is Russia’s use of disinformation to advance the Kremlin’s foreign policy goals. The Russian embassy did not comment on the accusation.
On October 20, the Americans released a previously classified intelligence assessment, sent to more than 100 governments, which states that Moscow is using spies, social networks and state media to undermine public faith in the integrity of democratic elections. .
The new statement says Russia uses press contacts in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay to spread disinformation to weaken support for Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion and fuel opinions contrary to NATO and the USA.
The alleged “information manipulation campaign” was coordinated by three Russian organizations: the Social Design Agency, the Institute for Internet Development and Structura, according to the statement.
The note classifies companies in the “influence for hire” sector that have co-opted local media and influencers in Latin America.
