US Navy warship intercepts missiles near Yemen, officials say

A US Navy warship operating in the Middle East intercepted three missiles off the coast of Yemen on Thursday, two US officials told Reuters. CNN .

One of the authorities said the missiles were fired by members of the Houthi group supported by Iran, which are involved in an ongoing conflict in Yemen (see map of the region below).

Pentagon press secretary Brigadier General Pat Ryder confirmed that the USS Carney shot down three land attack missiles as well as several drones launched by Houthi forces.

“This action was a demonstration of the integrated air and missile defense that we have built in the Middle East and that we are prepared to use it, whenever necessary, to protect our partners and our interest in this important region,” he said at a press conference .

“There were no casualties to U.S. forces and none, to our knowledge, to any civilians on the ground,” Ryder added.

The Brigadier General also said that the The Pentagon cannot say for sure at this time what the targets of the missiles and drones were. but said they were launched from Yemen and were heading north along the Red Sea, “potentially toward targets in Israel.”

The USS Carney transited the Suez Canal to the Red Sea on Wednesday (19). US Fleet Forces command said in a social media post that it would “help ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East.”

Israel is north of the Red Sea, above Saudi Arabia and directly from Egypt
