US: Initial jobless claims rose less than expected last week

The number of U.S. citizens filing for unemployment insurance benefits increased by 202,000 in the week ending Dec. 23, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reported Thursday. The reading came in below market expectations and follows an increase of 220,000 in the previous week.

Further details from the release revealed that the advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% and the 4-week moving average was at 207,750, down 4,750 from the previous week's revised average.

Additionally, Continued Employment Applications decreased by 31,000 to 1.855 million in the week ending December 23.

Market reaction

The Dollar Index attempted a rebound to the 102.50 area after the publication of the ADP report.
