US House passes bill to avoid government shutdown

The U.S. House voted to pass a stopgap funding bill just hours before a midnight local time deadline to avoid a federal government shutdown. The Senate must now analyze the project.

The vote was 366 to 34. Thirty-four Republicans voted against it.

The bill would extend government funding through March and includes provisions for disaster relief and agriculture, but does not include a suspension of the debt limit, which President-elect Donald Trump has been demanding Republicans address.

If lawmakers fail to extend that deadline, the U.S. government will begin a partial shutdown that will halt funding for everything from border enforcement to national parks and cut pay for more than 2 million federal employees.

When will Donald Trump be inaugurated as President of the United States?
