The United States House approved the formalization of an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, which had been launched in September by the then President of the House, Republican Kevin McCarthy.
Since that month, the trio of committees leading the investigation have questioned numerous Justice Department and Internal Revenue Service officials, while also obtaining many documents and new bank records, including from members of the Biden family.
The formalization, according to members of the Republican Party, strengthens the subpoenas and the legal position of the investigation. GOP members on the House Rules Committee also argued that the move was a response to the administration’s obstruction in turning over requested documents.
Focus of the investigation
The House oversight panel, one of the committees leading the investigation, focused on Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings and sought to make connections with his father, Joe Biden.
In the initial stages of the investigation, they questioned five people and issued nine bank subpoenas, but increased the issuance of nine subpoenas for statements in the last month.
The Republican-led committee released a document last week showing payments from Hunter Biden’s business entity, Owasco PC, to Joe Biden when he was not in office, but omitted evidence that the president’s son was reimbursing his father for a car.
There were also two personal checks from the president’s brother, James Biden, to Joe Biden when he was not in office, which the committee released. However, available evidence suggests that these were loan repayments.
While these payments are a far cry from accusations that the president profited from his family’s overseas business dealings, the existence of the checks provided fuel for political adversaries and the Republican Party’s far-right base.
Lack of evidence
But even with new subpoenas and scheduling of more testimony by Republicans, including from the president’s brother and son, they have still not discovered evidence to support the allegations against Biden.
There has only been one hearing related to the inquiry since its launch, where experts called by the Republicans acknowledged that the party’s investigators had not yet presented sufficient evidence to support the accusations.
At every stage, House Democrats and the White House refuted, and sometimes even denied, the accusations raised by Republicans, who tried to link Joe Biden to his son’s million-dollar foreign agreements.
