Speaking from the Lithuanian city of Vilnius, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said it was evident that Russia had made a decision and was positioning itself to carry out an attack on Ukraine.
“They are unfolding, and now, [estão] ready to attack,” Austin said. If you look at the position they are in today, it is apparent that [Putin] made a decision and they are moving into the right positions to conduct an attack.”
Austin reiterated previous comments by US President Joe Biden that Russian President Vladimir Putin had decided to invade the neighboring country. Biden’s speech came after weeks in which the US said there was no definite decision from Russia.
Austin and others in the US continue to say diplomacy is still possible, and he added, “I believe we should try until the last minute, until it’s not possible.”
On Friday, President Biden said he believed Russian forces intended to attack Ukraine “in the next week” or sooner, and that an attack would target the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. “As of this moment, I am convinced that he has made the decision,” Biden said during remarks at the White House.
In a speech at the Security Conference in Munich, Germany, US Vice President Kamala Harris said the country would impose “unprecedented sanctions” on Russian banks and industries in the event of an invasion of Ukraine.
