US Special Counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday brought new charges against former President Donald Trump on charges of fraud, tampering with testimony and conspiracy against the rights of citizens.
The complaint refers to the investigation into efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential elections, which culminated in the invasion of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
This is the second federal charge the former president faces in the Smith investigation.
On Tuesday afternoon, a judge agreed to seal the indictment returned by the Grand Jury, hearing the evidence.
The judge also approved a subpoena for Trump to appear in court.
For the past few days, Trump and his advisers have been preparing to respond to the impending indictment. The former president’s team lined up surrogates, influencers and allies to respond immediately to the new allegations, and also prepared a series of pre-written statements and videos defending the former president’s actions before and on January 6, 2021, which they intend to send to supporters.
“We have a lot of products and content ready to postpone the Jan. 6 material, not unlike what we’ve done before,” a Trump adviser told CNN.
The Trump campaign must rely on the playbook they used on previous indictments to frame any further allegations as interference in his 2024 presidential campaign, as well as painting Smith as a Trump target for purely political reasons — including allegations that the Justice Department it is unfairly placing more focus on his behavior than that of President Joe Biden.
