A delegation of the US Federal Congress was in NATO and met with the Secretary General. of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg. The delegation included the chairmen of the Senate and House Foreign Affairs Committees, Patrick Leahy, Bob Menendez and Richard Neal, along with 13 other distinguished Democrat and Republican senators and lawmakers.
Mr Stoltenberg briefed the delegation on work to strengthen NATO deterrence and defense and the Allies’ efforts to provide and maintain support in Ukraine, including security assistance. According to the announcement of the Alliance, they discussed the historic application of Finland and Sweden for NATO membership. Mr Stoltenberg said he welcomed strong US bipartisan support for Finland and Sweden’s accession to the Alliance. He also noted the importance of addressing security concerns for all Allies.
The bipartisan delegation and the Secretary-General also discussed next month’s NATO Summit, including strengthening Alliance deterrence and defense and strengthening support for partners. Finally, they considered the burden-sharing within the Alliance and the importance of continued defense investment.
