The first joint meeting of a US-China working group on fentanyl precursor chemicals will be held on Tuesday in Beijing, a senior US official said on Sunday.
“This is a key part of implementing our bilateral cooperation in this effort,” the U.S. representative told reporters.
Fentanyl is one of the leading causes of drug overdoses in the United States. The US has claimed that China is the main source of the chemical precursors synthesized into fentanyl by drug cartels in Mexico. China denies it.
The representative added that the United States has information that China initiated actions against chemical precursor companies in the country at the time of the summit between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping last November.
The United States will continue with law enforcement actions, in addition to controlling precursors, and the meeting is a crucial moment for the issue, said the official.
