US ambassador to the UN defends transparent investigation into Dom and Bruno’s death

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield CNN in an exclusive interview, a transparent investigation into the deaths of the English journalist Dom Phillips and the indigenist Bruno Pereira. This is the first time a US government official has spoken out about the murder.

“This is an issue that we prioritize in our government: the protection of journalists’ rights, so that they can inform the world, for example, of what is happening with indigenous peoples in Brazil. Without journalists, we don’t know what’s going on. Learning of their disappearance and then their deaths was terrible. Now, more important than anything right now is to open a transparent investigation into what happened to them.” CNN .

Thomas-Greenfield represents the United States on the UN Security Council and believes that the tension in the Amazon and the protection of journalists impact the entire world.

“This is a priority for the Security Council [da ONU] also because our responsibility is to deal with the issue of peace and security. It’s not just problems related to governments but also to people,” he said.

For the ambassador, the attack on journalists has increased in recent years.

“People are struggling to tell the truth,” he pointed out.

In the midst of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the US government has positioned itself against the presence of Vladimir Putin’s troops in Ukrainian territory.

THE CNN Thomas-Greenfield came out in defense of the actions of the UN Security Council.

“Russia has to be responsible for all these crimes it has committed, against the population, against women, such as rapes against women, violating international human rights issues.”

She explains that the UN system was created around the concept of saving the next generation from the “scourge of war”.

“Many people are saying that the security council has failed because the war has been going on for so long, but in fact, we have not failed. We have succeeded in condemning Russia who thought they could do this without dealing with the consequences of their actions,” she said.

During the Obama administration, the ambassador served as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs at the State Department. This month, the United States celebrates the emancipation of black people.

The date, June 19, is called Juneteenth and has been recognized as a national holiday by the Biden administration.

“We cannot commemorate this horrible event called slavery, which impacted the lives of millions of people who were enslaved, including Brazil. It is an opportunity to look at our history.”
