US aid to Afghanistan to withdraw its troops

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has approved the deployment of two additional B-52 bombers to the Gulf and extended the deployment in the area of the USS Eisenhower to protect the announced withdrawal of international coalition forces from Afghanistan, said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

The head of the US Pentagon “approved some additional measures today”, Kirby said during a press conference.

The USS Eisenhower will remain in the area “for a while”, while the two B-52s “arrived there”, he added.

The so-called “Stratofortress” heavy bombers, which can carry nuclear weapons, are usually stationed in Qatar, where the US military has a large military base.

The spokesman did not rule out the possibility of sending additional reinforcements to participate in the huge logistics operation for the withdrawal of about 2,500 US troops, as well as more than 16,000 civilian subcontractors and their equipment.

In addition, there are approximately 7,000 NATO troops who rely heavily on the US military to transport troops and equipment.

“It is reasonable to believe that there may be temporary additional measures to protect the forces,” he added, noting that while the advanced tanks will be airlifted, others will be given to the Afghan army.
