Her interior minister UruguayLuis Alberto Hever, but also two additional members of the government (a deputy minister and an adviser to the president Luis Lacaille Pou) they resigned because of the scandal over the granting of a passport to a wanted drug trafficker.
On Wednesday Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo had also resigned after the revelation of his November 2022 phone call in which he implied that his deputy minister withheld information about the investigation into the controversial passport issue.
Sebastian Marchet, currently a fugitive, applied for a Uruguayan passport in October 2021 and received it at the end of November of the same year while being held in the United Arab Emirates because he tried to leave the country with a fake Paraguayan passport.
Bustillo on Friday denied any wrongdoing, claiming he did not know who Marchet was when the passport was issued, shifting the blame to the interior ministry.
“Do we like that a drug dealer got a passport? Obviously not”, Uruguayan President Lacaille Pou said at a press conference. But he expressed his belief that the resigned ministers Hever and Bustillo “have no legal responsibility” for the issuance of the passport and it remains for them to prove it in court.
