Uproar in Germany: At SPD event at least nine women drugged with ‘rape pills’

An uproar has broken out in Germanyas the Police investigate an event of the social democratic party SPD, in which at least nine women were drugged with “pills of rape,” according to German authorities.

“The disturbance is very great,” a spokesman for the Social Democrats parliamentary group told AFP, confirming information from the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

Berlin police announced that they are investigating a case of grievous bodily harm after a 21-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against the unknown.

“I advise all concerned to file a complaint,” a caucus official, Katia Mast, also tweeted. Nine victims have been recorded so far, but the representative of the parliamentary group did not rule out the possibility of more.

In an e-mail to the participants of this summer party held on Wednesday evening near the chancellery building, the SPD denounced “a monstrous act which was immediately reported by us to the Bundestag police”.

About a thousand people participated at the SPD’s traditional summer party that takes place before Parliament’s summer vacation, in which the chancellor and many MPs and their associates participate, among others.

“It was an internal event. One could only enter by invitation,” the spokesman said. “There are still a lot of questions, the police are investigating.”

How the case unfolded

In a statement, Berlin police, referring to a “political party summer party”, said they were alerted by a 21-year-old woman who the day after the incident had no memory of the previous night.

The girl went to the hospital for a medical examination and filed a complaint.

At the party, the young woman, who had consumed food and soft drinks, felt unwell, suffering from nausea and especially dizziness.

Police said they have been made aware of four other cases so far.
